当前的毒理学过程和方法面临各种挑战和限制因素。这些研究方法通常效率较低或者成本过高,意味着它们无法可持续地使用,并且有时过度依赖于动物试验。当前关于某些毒理学研究过程的法规要求也是高度谨慎的;在当今的规则下,很难将过去的药物(例如阿司匹林)推向市场。另外,其他领域的新产品和治疗手段层出不穷,这就需要新的毒理学研究方法。
