Gene therapy products treat diseases by replacing, inactivating, or modifying a gene to alter the biological properties of living cells. Direct in vivo gene therapy uses viral or nonviral delivery vehicles to administer gene therapies into the body. Ex vivo gene therapy involves the extraction of cells from a donor or patient, which are then genetically modified by physical, chemical, or viral methods, and subsequently infused into the patient.
