The new Agilent 1290 Infinity II LC System maximizes efficiency for operators, scientists, and laboratory managers

By Christian Gotenfels
Agilent Senior Product Manager for UHPLC

Economic constraints necessitate laboratories in all fields to further improve their workflows to increase efficiency and productivity. The new Agilent 1290 Infinity II LC System meets these demands by providing breakthrough technologies that improve analytical, instrument, and laboratory efficiency.

Maximize analytical efficiency

Analytical efficiency determines the quality of analytical data, thus providing scientists and their clients with confidence in the end results for related business decisions. The Agilent 1290 Infinity II LC System (shown in Figure 1) delivers more chromatographic resolution because of lower system dispersion and higher detector data rates. The highest peak capacity can be easily achieved by switching between single-dimension UHPLC and the power of two-dimensional LC. The multi-wash capabilities of the new 1290 Infinity II Multisampler reduce carryover to less than 9 parts-per-million (ppm) for uncompromised data quality (Figure 2). Even more detection capabilities, based on UV absorption and evaporative light scattering, deliver the lowest detection limits with an ultra-wide dynamic range. Reliable peak identification by retention times is guaranteed by the unmatched precision of flow and solvent composition of the new 1290 Infinity II High Speed Pump and the new 1290 Infinity II Flexible Pump.

Maximize instrument efficiency

Instrument efficiency is not only determined by the instrument’s capabilities – such as speed, capacity, and flexibility – but also by the level of ease for the user to interact with the instrument. As we know, for example, instrument efficiency addresses the operator’s need for faster injection cycles. By running samples alternately, the revolutionary dual-needle injection mode of the Agilent 1290 Infinity II Multisampler reduces cycle times to mere seconds, virtually eliminating sample injection time. Fitted with eight shallow drawers, a total capacity of up to 6144 samples is possible – all within the footprint of a standard Agilent LC stack. The new Agilent 1290 Infinity II Multicolumn Thermostat together with new Quick-Connect heat exchanger and A-line Quick Connect fittings make the organization and installation of columns an easy task (Figure 3). The wide power, temperature, and automatically scalable injection range (from less than 1 µL up to 500 µL) of the 1290 Infinity II LC system offer maximum flexibility for all applications.

Maximize laboratory efficiency

Laboratory efficiency is critical for lab managers, purchasing managers, directors, and lab owners. It is a measure of how well the instrument is integrated into the laboratory infrastructure, delivering lowest cost per sample without disrupting the workflows. The Agilent 1290 Infinity II LC provides seamless transfer of methods between LCs – regardless of the brand – thanks to the unique Intelligent System Emulation Technology (ISET) (shown in Figure 4). Besides the market-leading Agilent OpenLAB Chromatographic Data System, the 1290 Infinity II LC can be controlled by any major chromatographic data system in any laboratory infrastructure via the instrument control framework (ICF) facilitating the integration. Optimizing lifecycle costs of capital assets impacts the efficiency of the laboratory, and Agilent provides the tools needed to reduce the cost per sample.

The new Agilent 1290 Infinity II LC System embodies the next generation of UHPLC and helps you to maximize the efficiency of your business in three different areas.
