Agilent VeriPulse enables fully automated NMR system calibration, maintenance, and optimization
By Paul Bowyer
Agilent NMR Applications Scientist
Historically, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectrometers have required experienced users to devote hours of time to regularly measure system performance. Additionally, these users had to manually optimize the shim values to maintain optimal system performance. Keeping an NMR system at the operational level needed to meet installation specification tests required in-depth user training and hands-on experience. With the Agilent VeriPulse system optimization package, anyone can easily verify that the Agilent ProPulse and 400-MR NMR systems are performing as designed.
VeriPulse is a new feature of Agilent VnmrJ 4.1 software, which comes standard with the new Agilent ProPulse NMR System and 400-MR NMR Spectrometers.
Shimming the magnetic field gradients - now fully automated
One of the fundamental requirements for optimal NMR performance is that the magnetic field surrounding the sample be homogeneous to within a few parts per billion. The most important system specification tests are predicated on having excellent magnetic field homogeneity (Figure 1). This is accomplished by adjusting the currents in the shim gradient coils. While many methods have been developed to help users perform this task in a fast and simple manner, it has always required expert-level attention and hours of manual shimming for the system to meet performance specifications.
With the introduction of VeriPulse, Agilent has moved system testing and qualification into a fully automated and routine process. Users simply select the desired tests and desired targets for those tests (Figure 2) and the system does all the work, reliably and reproducibly meeting all system test specifications, at any time.
Specification reporting - ideal for system performance tracking
Once Agilent VeriPulse completes data system optimization and data collection, the test results are delivered using a simple and clear test report (Figure 3). The report shows which tests were performed, together with a target and result for each test, and clear notification of whether the test passed. This test report can be used as the basis for a complete system testing and qualification program that users can repeat at will.
