Reflectance FTIR Spectroscopy
Reflectance FTIR is used to acquire high quality spectral data from solid samples. Specular reflection is used with reflective surfaces, diffuse reflection (DRIFTS) works with rougher, less reflective surfaces (often powders), and reflection-absorption grazing angle FTIR measures sub-micron thin films and contaminants on surfaces.

As very satisfied long-term users of the Agilent 4500, my research group are equally pleased by the convenience, performance and versatility of the Agilent 4300. Our research on materials chemistry has been much facilitated by its portability and the extensive range of sampling accessories available. It has been of particular benefit for our research programmes with industry partners, and its ease-of-use also makes it suitable for use by less-experienced users - the software is particularly straightforward and intuitive to use. To be honest, we would be lost without it!

The Agilent 4300 has converted me to a user of IR spectroscopy first, only going to my previously preferred technologies (SEM / EDX and XRD) afterwards. My group works on low temperature mineralogy, especially tricky carbonate phases or mixed soils and sediments. The portable nature of the instrument has permitted me to analyze temperature sensitive minerals (ikaite) on snowy riverbanks, and the diffuse reflectance mode has provided a means to routinely screen for calcite / aragonite transitions in stalagmites in a way impossible before. Diamond-ATR measurements are a routine part of my approach to new samples now, especially since the technique identified an amorphous Mg-Si phase in a set
